The Barnabas Sports Trust, organiser of the Cockington Christmas Caper yet again put on a festive event for cross-country runners. The race took place on Saturday 6th December and lived up to its reputation as being muddy, challenging and enjoyable!
The annual race held in Cockington, South Devon, is a highlight for many cross-country runners who turn out each year to race through 7 miles of mud, sweat, tears and laughter.
Places for the event filled up quickly reaching its 100 runner limit in advance of race-day demonstrating the positive reputation the event has built up over its four year history. It is much loved for its unique features as well as the challenge it provides for participators.
A festive atmosphere was created with every runner receiving a Christmas pudding and being greeted with the sound of Christmas carols at the finish line. As well as the festive theme, the values and nature of The Barnabas Sports Trust were portrayed throughout the event with marshals handing out jelly babies to provide runners with much-needed energy as they hit some of the toughest spots.

The overall winner was James Johnson running for Devon and Cornwall Police in a time of 00:57:58. The first lady home was Cathy Fewings running for Torbay Athletics Club in a time of 01:08:30.
Matt Day, Project Co-ordinator for The Barnabas Sports Trust said:
"Since we started the race in 2005 we have been delighted with the response and feedback from runners, this year is no exception and thanks to the glorious weather our marshals and spectators looked happier this year!"
The event this year was generously supported by local running shop The Runner's Guide, who donated the prizes, and national recovery drinks company For Goodness Shakes, who provided a recovery drink for every runner. The Barnabas Sports Trust is looking to build on the success of the past four years and already has the 2009 Cockington Christmas Caper booked for Saturday 5th December. Organisers are keen to hear from any company who would like to get involved next year with sponsoring the event or donating prizes.
